Chaplaincy?

The Chaplaincy

The UK Oil and Gas Chaplaincy is an ecumenical chaplaincy working to bring pastoral care and support to the people of the UK Oil and Gas Industry in their workplaces and homes. We do this through our engagement in the Industry. The Chaplain makes frequent trips offshore to visit workers and provide pastoral care in the places this is required. The Chaplaincy responds to incidents and emergencies, and cares for families in times of bereavement and difficulty. The Chaplaincy updates and maintains the Industry books of remembrance, and hosts acts of remembrance for specific incidents as well as the annual service of remembrance each November.

While ad hoc services can always be arranged for any specific situation a special service is held annually in the Kirk of St Nicholas, in Union Street, Aberdeen.

The Annual Service of Remembrance is a commemoration for those who have died while working offshore. This service takes place on the first Saturday of November.

The Chaplaincy, on behalf of the Oil and Gas industry, operates the hardship fund which provides financial awards to those who have worked in the Oil and Gas Industry, who have fallen into financial hardship. More information on the hardship fund is available here.

The Chaplaincy offers support regardless of faith, denomination or background. We exist to provide pastoral care and support to all – not just those who identify with a specific faith.

Our main objectives are;

  • Providing pastoral support for individuals or groups.
  • Administering the Hardship Fund to provide financial support to oil industry workers past or present, and their direct dependants, who find themselves in a position of hardship. To learn more about the Hardship Fund please click here
  • In an emergency, providing the first point of contact for pastoral support or referrals to other religious organisations.
  • Conduct offshore and onshore memorial commemorations.
  • Maintain the Oil and Gas Book of Remembrance which lists those who have died working offshore.
  • Provide training and expertise in areas of Mental Health and Wellbeing.
  • Advising on religious protocol or on delicate service arrangements.
  • Providing a spiritual focal point for the oil and gas industry.
  • Arranging and conducting appropriate religious services or other ceremonies for significant events such as marriages, baptisms, funerals or memorial services.

In all of this the denominational affiliations and beliefs of all will be respected.

Thank you to all companies, organisation and individuals for their continued support
